The compass method uses two crossing guide-curves to divide a freeform input surface with an equilateral grid that follows projections of the guide curve. and then uses Kangaroo 2 to generate a bending-active structure from this with a shape approximative to the freeform input surface.

DESCRIPTION 

Here, we simulate the effect of a set of intersecting bent curves that want to straighten themselves out. The curves are divided into parts at their intersections to have overlapping Kangaroo particles. These curve segments together try to create a straight line using the bending force.
 
PROCEDURE
1.Find the intersection coordinates for each curve
2.Add the start and end coordinates of each curve
3.Create a sub-curve for each domain segment
4.Divide each sub-curve and merge all division points in one list per curve.

DESCRIPTION 
This exercise explains the “Rod” Goals-Angle component in Kangaroo, which can be used to create a bending and stretching resistant rod, suitable for when designing bending-active structures. To simulate a curve wanting to straighten itself out, an Angle Factor of 0 degrees needs to be applied to a discretised polyline version of that curve. The image shows the transition over time from an original curve into a curve that is “as straight as possible” whilst maintaining the anchor points in place

This exercise uses the zombie solver for Kangaroo. This way we get both the original and the processed data as an output from the Kangaroo engine. With the Kangaroo Settings we can control how many sub-iterations have taken place between both states. The difference in length between the original and the final lines gives an indication of the tension present in those elements, allowing us to perform a rudimentary structural analysis.  

PROCEDURE 

1.Run the Kangaroo Zombie Solver  
2.Extract the processed mesh  
3.Compare the original length and the processed length of the mesh 
4.Display the difference in gradient

DESCRIPTION

This exercise simulates a tensegrity system with cables under tension and sticks under compression.  

PROCEDURE 

1. Use pipeline to extract all curves / points drawn on the respective layers.  
2. Break the tension curves into sub-curves to simulate a chain-like behaviour  
3. Apply length constraint onto the sticks with its original length  
4. Apply a gravity force onto the stick-ends  
5. Apply length constraint onto the cable segments with 0.9 of its original length to create tension  
6. Apply a gravity force onto the ends of the cable segments  
7. Control the paths of the input data by splitting compression from tension elements with two show components  
8. Extract the processed data and pipe the compression elements
